Texas and Georgia have separate Harris court files

Use the state and court shown on the case papers to choose a Harris County criminal-record route. Texas’s District Clerk provides criminal-court and online case services. Georgia’s Harris County Clerk of Superior Court has its own criminal filings and records responsibilities. A same-name result from the other state does not identify your case.

In Texas, the District Clerk route includes county criminal courts

Texas criminal court Matters described by the clerk
District criminal courts Felony cases
County Criminal Courts at Law Class A and B misdemeanors, plus appeals from justice and municipal courts

The Harris District Clerk’s criminal-courts guidance covers both categories. Do not reject its service solely because the case is a misdemeanor. At the same time, an appeal from a municipal court is not evidence that every original municipal case can be retrieved there. Follow the exact court and cause number you have.

Use the Texas case details to narrow the request

The District Clerk’s online-services description includes case details, parties, documents, costs and file location. That information can help identify which filing and office you need. It does not promise that every document is publicly downloadable.

  1. Locate the case by the identifiers available to you and verify the court designation.
  2. Record the cause number and the document title or entry date relevant to your question.
  3. Check the file-location information if the desired record is unavailable.
  4. Ask the clerk about the particular copy and certification required instead of treating a screen of case details as the document itself.

For Georgia, start with the Superior Court clerk

Harris County, Georgia’s clerk page identifies criminal-case filing and court-record assistance among the office’s responsibilities and links Civil & Criminal Filings. Use that official county entry point when the paperwork identifies the Georgia court. Texas’s categories and portal instructions should not be transferred to this office.

Describe the proceeding, approximate filing period and particular order you need. Ask whether the office holds the record and how to request inspection or a copy. The existence of a filings link alone does not establish an all-years public criminal-history database.

What would answer the outcome question?

A charge entry identifies an allegation; to establish the case outcome, look for the judgment, dismissal or other resolving order. If several charges appear, identify the count you are asking about. When the available details cannot distinguish people with the same name, keep the match unresolved rather than joining unrelated records.

Texas copy requests become faster when you have the cause number

The Harris County District Clerk purchase-copies guidance asks for the case (cause) number, case style, and date of birth for criminal searches. If the required case information is unavailable, the clerk describes an additional $5 primary-information search. For online purchases, the page currently lists $1 for an electronic document of 1–10 pages, then $0.10 per page for 11 pages and up; paper copies are $1 per page and certification/seal is $5 per document.

Ask for the document that proves the point

A case search, a letter of disposition, and a certified judgment are not interchangeable. If the goal is to establish the outcome, identify the judgment, dismissal, disposition, or other specific filing rather than treating the charge listing as the outcome.

Before relying on a Harris County result

  • ✓
    Confirm the state

Harris County, Texas and Harris County, Georgia have separate court systems and custodians.

  • ✓
    Confirm the court

Use the court name on the case papers; in Texas, criminal district and County Criminal Courts at Law are covered by the District Clerk’s criminal services.

  • ✓
    Keep the cause number

It narrows the Texas copy request and can avoid a paid primary-information search.

  • ✓
    Choose the proof needed

Case details orient the search; a certified filing or letter of disposition may be needed to establish the outcome.

  • ✓
Do not infer from a missing online item

A document can be unavailable online while still obtainable from the clerk, or it may be restricted.
